Saffold and Brian

There is nothing that says “classic” like a little navy and white, and those were the beautiful colors chosen by bride Saffold for her May 23 wedding to Brian. As a catering and event manager for one of the most well-known catering companies in the South, I knew this bride would have every detail covered, but she was effortlessly relaxed and a true joy to work with!

The white hydrangea bouquets she chose were oh-so-Southern, and provided an elegant accent to the bridesmaids’ navy dresses. The navy and white straws took the color combo all the way to the bar, where they were placed in the happy couple’s signature drink, the “yellow hammer.” Also at the bar, Sweetwater 420 beer was offered to guests as a personal touch and nod to the special place where Saffold and Brian met – the Sweetwater 420 Festival in Atlanta. In fact, it’s even where Brian proposed…while on the Ferris wheel. How sweet is that?

After taking top-secret dance lessons, the bride and groom surprised their parents with a choreographed first dance to Van Morrison’s “Sweet Thing,” which was a big hit. Departing on a golf cart, the bride and groom were showered with bubbles and well wishes as they left to begin their new life as husband and wife.

Burying the Bourbon

As a native of the deep, deep, South, I am a huge fan of a laundry list of Southern traditions. But what I truly love are Southern wedding traditions, and I was thrilled to be introduced to the tradition of “burying the bourbon” by my June bride and groom, Abby and David.

I am well-versed on stocking the wedding bar with bourbon, and have seen bottles tastefully packaged and gifted to members of the wedding party, but burying the bottle? This was something new. However, after witnessing the gorgeous blue sky that graced Abby and David’s wedding day…I’m a believer.

Here’s how it works:

The story goes, if you bury a bottle of bourbon at the site where the bride and groom are to be married, then you’re guaranteed no rain on the wedding day. According to Southern folklore, the “burial” must take place exactly one month before the wedding day, the bottle must be completely full, and it must be buried upside down to successfully keep the rain away.

For Abby and David, the venue was an old family home in Daphne, Ala., the same location where Abby’s parents were married 30 years ago. (Didn’t I say I love traditions?) Superstitious or not, it was a fun way for the bride and groom to take a moment a few weeks before their big day and have a “pre-ceremony” ritual all their own. Want to try it? I think it’s definitely worth a shot.

Lauren and Matt

Well, lovelies, I had such fun planning this spring ceremony with Lauren and Matt, who gave new meaning to the term, Destination Wedding! This couple chose not to escape with their guests to a beautiful beachside locale, but instead invited their family and friends to their own coastal condo! The effect was a unique and deeply personal way to start their new life together at their own home-away-from-home.

The Big Picture

The morning ceremony was peaceful and intimate with only family and a few close friends witnessing the exchange of vows against the backdrop of the Gulf’s gorgeous blue-green waters. But the sweet serenity then escalated into a soulful celebration – for what better way to pay homage to the couple’s New Orleans roots than with a five-piece brass band that entertained them at brunch.

In terms of festivities, Lauren wanted to keep things simple, but memorable, and the popular Fisher’s in Orange Beach provided the perfect atmosphere for a little dining, a little dancing, and a whole lot of fun.

All the Details

The personal sentiment Lauren and Matt desired was captured in so many details of their big day. The groom’s cake was a special surprise to Matt, and he and his family even shared a few sweet tears upon its reveal. As Matt has a career in his family’s home remodeling business, the cake was a replica of their familiar company logo. The flavor? Carrot cake – Matt’s favorite. Take a peek for a few more details…

The tone of the wedding was set with the elegant invitations, which reflected the couple’s coastal setting.

Bride Lauren will forever have memories of her special day in their special place, and she and Matt can relive their wedding festivities every time they visit their condo.

The weather could truly not have been more beautiful, or more ideal for a wedding. Bridal white sand against a “something blue” sky and sea? Perfection!
